PHX Brunch Diaries: Black Owned Breakfast Spots You Need to Know (UPDATED)

01/29/24 | 4 Min. Read

Black Owned Breakfast and Brunch Spots Around the Valley

Brunch has always been one of my favorite ways to experience the city. It tells you a lot about a place. Who gathers there. What kind of energy it carries in the morning. Whether it feels rushed or whether it invites you to sit for a while and talk.

Some of the spots on this list are places I already know and love. Places I’ve eaten at enough times to confidently send people there without hesitation. Others are still on my list. Places I’ve heard about through word of mouth or have been meaning to pull up to when the timing feels right. Either way these are all Black owned spots around the Valley that deserve to be on your radar if brunch means something to you too.

This is not meant to be definitive. It is very much where I am right now in my brunch era.

Brunch and Sip
3714 E Indian School Rd, Phoenix, AZ 85018

Brunch and Sip is one of my regulars. It is one of those places that feels easy to recommend because it rarely disappoints. The peach cobbler French toast alone keeps it in rotation for me. The menu gives variety without being overwhelming and the energy always feels right whether you are there early or easing into the afternoon.

CC’s on Central
2800 N Central Ave Suite A100, Phoenix, AZ 85004

CC’s feels rooted. Breakfast all day. Soul food flavors. The kind of place that feels like it belongs exactly where it is. I have not had the chance to fully sit down and try everything yet but it is one of those spots that comes up often for a reason and I trust that.

The Cajun Breakfast Joint
2800 N Central Ave Suite A100, Phoenix, AZ 85004

Operating out of the same space as CC’s but bringing a completely different morning mood. Cajun inspired breakfast dishes that actually lean into flavor. This one has been on my list for a while and I am looking forward to finally pulling up because sometimes brunch needs a little spice.

SugarJam The Southern Kitchen
15111 N Hayden Rd Suite 170, Scottsdale, AZ 85260

SugarJam always feels like an experience. Good music. Lively energy. Food that feels like it was made to be enjoyed slowly. This is one of those brunches where you realize you have been sitting there for hours and no one is in a rush to leave. I appreciate that.

Breakfast Bitch
330 E Roosevelt St, Phoenix, AZ 85004

This one is very much about the experience. Loud. Playful. Downtown energy through and through. The food did not fully win me over personally but it is still memorable and sometimes that matters too. It is the kind of place you go once just to see what it is like for yourself.

Culinary Gangster
513 E Roosevelt St, Phoenix, AZ 85004

Culinary Gangster feels like one of those spots you are happy you found before everyone else starts talking about it. Creative breakfast options in a cozy downtown space. It feels intentional without trying too hard. Definitely one of those places I want to spend more time at.

Lolo’s Chicken and Waffles
Multiple Phoenix locations

Lolo’s is Phoenix history at this point. This is one of those places that feels familiar even if it is your first time going. Chicken and waffles done the way you expect them to be done. Reliable. Filling. Comforting. It has earned its place in the city.

LATHA
628 E Adams St, Phoenix, AZ 85004

LATHA has been on my list for a minute. Everything about it gives intentional brunch energy from the menu to the space itself. It feels like the kind of place you go when you want brunch to feel a little elevated but still grounded. I am looking forward to finally sitting down and seeing it for myself.

Georges Breakfast and Brunch
4715 S Rural Rd, Tempe, AZ 85282

This one has been popping up more and more lately. Georges feels like a neighborhood breakfast spot in the best way. A place for long conversations coffee refills and slow mornings. It is still on my list but it already feels like a place worth knowing about.

The Original Pancake House
6840 E Camelback Rd, Scottsdale, AZ 85251

View this post on Instagram

Sometimes you just want pancakes and a calm breakfast moment. No frills. No rush. This spot leans more classic than trendy but it does what it needs to do and does it consistently. That still matters.

Well Seasoned
4280 N Drinkwater Blvd, Scottsdale, Arizona

View this post on Instagram

Well Seasoned has been on my radar for a while. I haven’t sat down there yet but the energy and the love people have for this spot makes me want to pull up sooner rather than later. From what I’ve heard the flavors hit hard and it’s the kind of place where the vibes match the food. Definitely keeping it on my list.

This list will keep changing as I keep exploring and as Phoenix keeps growing. If you have been to any of these spots or have one I need to add next let me know. I am always listening.

With love and brunch on the brain
