Okay y’all, I gotta tell you about something that made me smile so hard my cheeks hurt — Black-owned ranches. Right here in the desert. Phoenix might be known for saguaros and summer heat that’ll have you questioning your life decisions, but we’ve also got soul, history, and some serious horseback flavor in this city.
When people think of cowboys, they almost never picture us. But let me remind you: Black folks been riding. We’ve been training, healing, and building legacies on horseback — and I recently came across not one, not two, but three Black-owned ranches in the Valley that are doing just that. So of course, I had to share. Let’s get into it:
1. Robinson Ranch — Where Healing Meets Horsepower
Now listen, Robinson Ranch is the real deal. This spot has been holding it down since 2011, and what sets it apart is its heart. This isn’t just a place to hop on a horse and ride around — Robinson Ranch is a certified equine therapeutic ranch.
That means they use horses to help people heal — physically, mentally, emotionally. Whether it’s for kids with special needs, veterans dealing with PTSD, or folks just trying to find peace, they’ve created a safe and welcoming space to connect, grow, and heal through horses.
It’s Black-owned, family-operated, and all about community. And the way they care? It’s real. You feel it from the second you step on that property.
2. The Knight Ranch by Flying Crows — History You Can Ride With
Whew, The Knight Ranch? Now this one has roots. Deep ones.
The Flying Crows behind this ranch have been part of Phoenix history for generations. Their story carries legacy, land, and the kind of strength that comes from folks who’ve worked hard for everything they’ve built. The Knight Ranch isn’t just a ranch — it’s a symbol.
They host community events, teach riding lessons, and stay connected to the culture. You can feel the history in the air out there. It’s the kind of place that reminds you we’ve always belonged in this space — wide open land, freedom, connection, tradition. Cowboys and cowgirls in full effect.
3. Copper State Riding Club — The New Kid With Big Energy
Now let me put you on to the newest Black-owned ranch in the Valley: Copper State Riding Club. This spot is fresh on the scene and already bringing big energy. New doesn’t mean small, either — they’re coming in strong with programs for all ages, especially youth.
Their focus? Accessibility and education. They’re making horseback riding feel less like something “other people” do and more like something we do, because we always have. It’s giving representation matters in real life.
If you’ve ever wanted to try riding but didn’t know where to start or felt out of place — this is your sign. Copper State is for us, by us, and the vibe is welcoming, chill, and fun.
So, What’s the Giddy-Up?
Black people on ranches isn’t new — it’s just under-celebrated. These three ranches are changing that narrative in their own unique ways: healing, heritage, and fresh beginnings.
Phoenix might not seem like cowboy country at first glance, but we’re out here. Riding. Building. Thriving.
Next time you want a unique experience — maybe for the kids, a little solo self-care, or just to try something new — hit up one of these spots. Support Black ranchers. Learn the stories. Feel the earth under your boots and the wind on your face.
And remember: we’ve always been part of this land. These ranches just make sure we never forget.
Whats the word?
