I don’t know about you, but for me, thrift shopping is like a little therapy session. There’s something about digging through racks of vintage pieces, finding that unexpected gem, and knowing it’s one-of-a-kind. It’s a quiet way to reset and express myself without breaking the bank.
Lately, I’ve been trying to be more intentional about where I spend my money—especially when it comes to supporting Black-owned businesses here in the Valley. And thankfully, there are some amazing Black-owned thrift stores right here in Phoenix and the surrounding areas that make it easy to do both.
If you’re into fashion, community, and finding one-of-a-kind pieces that feel like little treasures, here are three spots you’ll definitely want to visit.
1. The Thread: Do the Damn Thing
📍 1242 E Washington St, Phoenix, AZ 85034
📲 @thethreadphx
Let me tell you, the name alone had me sold. Like yes—do the damn thing! And that’s exactly what they’re doing at The Thread. This place is more than a thrift store; it’s a whole energy. From vintage tees and fly accessories to repurposed fashion that gives you that one-of-a-kind look, it’s the kind of place you don’t just shop at—you catch a vibe.
The layout is clean, curated, and clearly made with love. And the owner? A fashion visionary with an eye for statement pieces that still feel wearable. You’ll walk out with something unique and still feel like you got a steal. Win-win.
2. Sew Used
📍 437 S Gilbert Rd Suite 104, Mesa, AZ 85204
📲 @sewused_
Okay, Sew Used is that sleeper hit of the East Valley. Tucked away but absolutely worth the trip. It has that nostalgic, real-deal thrift feel—like you’re about to find a random pair of high-waisted jeans from the ’90s that fit like they were tailored for you.
And the cool thing is, it’s not just about clothes. They’ve got household goods, books, art, and some lowkey designer pieces if you’re lucky. The inventory rotates often, which makes it fun to pop in whenever you’re in the area—you never know what’s waiting for you.
The owner keeps it real, and there’s a warmth to the whole place that makes you want to stay a while. It’s giving: cozy, sustainable, and affordable.
3. Thrift Stories (New on the Scene)
📍 1001 N Central Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85004
This one’s the baby of the bunch—but don’t sleep on it just because it’s new. Thrift Stories has already made a splash with its clean aesthetic and modern approach to secondhand fashion. Think: curated racks, stylish displays, and that “this could totally be on Pinterest” vibe.
They focus a lot on storytelling (hence the name), and every piece feels like it’s been handpicked to tell a little style story. They’ve even hosted community events, pop-ups, and style showcases, which makes it feel more like a hub than just a store.
If you’re into fashion with a bit of depth—and love supporting new Black-owned businesses from the jump—this is the one to watch.
Closing Thoughts
Honestly, thrifting is one of my favorite lowkey forms of therapy, and doing it while uplifting Black entrepreneurs in the Valley? That’s a win I’ll take any day. Whether you’re looking for something bold, basic, or beautifully weird, these three shops—The Thread, Sew Used, and Thrift Stories—have you covered.
So go ahead: carve out a Saturday, grab your iced coffee, and hit up these gems. You never know what stories (or outfits) you’ll find.
Whats the word?
