3 Black-Led Active Groups in Phoenix That Feel Like Family

08/12/2025 | 2 Min. Read

Listen. I know working out isn’t everybody’s favorite thing. And with Phoenix heat? Please. But there’s something different about moving your body when you’re surrounded by good people, good energy, and a reason to actually look forward to showing up.

That’s what these groups are about. They’re Black-led, they’re welcoming, and they’re not trying to make you feel like you need to be an athlete just to join in. You just… show up. That’s it.

BLK AZ Run Club
They’re out here running along Tempe Town Lake on Sunday mornings, hitting Encanto Park during the week, and making running feel way less intimidating than it sounds. I’ve seen people who go hard with their miles and others who are just out there for a walk-jog situation — and nobody’s looking at you sideways. Plus, the vibe afterward is so good it makes getting up early feel worth it.

SWIMBLK
This one is so dope because, honestly, swimming spaces don’t always feel like they’re for us. SWIMBLK flips that. They meet up at different pools around the city, sometimes for workouts, sometimes just for fun, always with music playing and people laughing. You don’t have to be an Olympic swimmer — you can come to learn, to splash, or just to hang by the pool and be part of the community.

Phoenix Black Tennis Club
This group plays all over — Phoenix Tennis Center, Rose Mofford, Kiwanis Park — and they make tennis fun again. No weird country club energy, just people who like the game and are happy to teach you if you’re brand new. I’ve heard it’s super low-pressure, lots of laughs, and plenty of “all love” moments.

Honestly? It’s more than just staying active. These spaces are where you meet people who root for you, where you find a reason to get out the house, where you feel seen.

If you’ve been waiting for a sign to get moving, this is it. Pick one, show up, and see what happens.
