I’m Mila, an Arizona-born Black woman with deep Mississippi roots. Growing up between the South and the West gave me two very different cultural experiences. In Mississippi, Black culture was everywhere: in the food, the community, the everyday life. In Arizona, the contrast was clear. After years of living in Phoenix, I often found myself wondering, “Where is the culture? Where is the Black community represented?”
That question stayed with me, especially as I met more Black people who felt the same way when they visited or moved here. That shared experience is what inspired me to create blkphxaz.
About The Blog
BlackPhoenixArizona.com was built to bring visibility to Black Arizona—its businesses, its creatives, its culture, and its community. This platform serves as a guide and resource for discovering Black-owned restaurants, events, spots, and spaces throughout Phoenix and the surrounding areas.
My goal is simple: to highlight the places and people that make Black Phoenix vibrant, even if they aren’t always easy to find. Whether you’re new to the Valley, visiting, or a longtime local, blkphxaz is here to help you connect with the culture, support Black-owned businesses, and explore the community in a meaningful way.
Welcome to the blkphxaz community!
– Mila
